White willow bark (Salix alba)

What white willow bark is, how classical Indian texts describe it, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.

Names

Shveta vetasa (Sanskrit); Bed sada (Urdu). The part used is the bark extract.

Classical Indian view

API Vol VI (Shveta Vetasa) covers the leaf, not the bark. It lists Vrana shodhana (cleanses wounds), with uses in Shvitra (API Vol VI).

Key compounds

Salicin and other salicylates, plus polyphenols. Salicin is not salicylic acid.

What studies show

  • A willow bark extract reduced inflammatory signals in skin cells (PubMed).
  • A hops and willow bark cleanser lowered forehead oil over 15 days. This was a split-face trial (n=21) that tested the blend, not willow alone (PubMed).

Safety

Avoid it if you are allergic to aspirin or salicylates (PubMed).

GraceYes products that contain it

White Willow Soap, Face Serum, Body Lotion.
