How to get rid of dark lips naturally: a lip scrub and lip balm routine

Short answer: To get rid of dark lips naturally, first find the cause: sun, smoking, dryness, lip licking or a reaction to a product. Then protect your lips from the sun, moisturise daily with a plain balm, and exfoliate gently two or three times a week. Skip lemon juice. Naturally deeper lip colour is normal.

Key takeaways

  • Find the cause first: sun, smoking, dryness, licking or biting, or a product reaction.
  • A scrub and balm make lips look smoother; they cannot change the shade you were born with.
  • Scrub only two or three times a week, and moisturise every night.
  • Skip lemon juice, which can sting and cause a burn-like reaction in sunlight.
  • Caution: lips that darken suddenly, or a single dark spot that changes, need a doctor.

Why are my lips dark?

Lip colour is largely inherited, and many Indian lips are naturally deeper in tone, sometimes darker at the edges than in the centre. That is healthy skin, not a problem. Darkening that is new or patchy usually has a cause: sun exposure, smoking, habitual lip licking or biting, long-term dryness and peeling, and allergic reactions to a lipstick, lip balm or toothpaste flavouring. Less often it is linked to medicines or an underlying health issue, which is why sudden changes deserve a doctor's look.

Can dark lips become lighter naturally?

Sometimes, if the cause stops. Lips that look dull because of dry, flaky skin often look more even as soon as they are smooth and moisturised. Pigment from sun or smoking can fade slowly once you protect your lips and quit, usually over months. No scrub, balm or kitchen remedy can change the shade you were born with, and we would not want to sell you one that claims to.

What do I need for a simple lip care routine?

A gentle scrub, a plain balm and some shade or a lip product with a stated SPF. If you would like a ready scrub to start with, ours is below.

Honest note: it contains peppermint and beeswax, so skip it if your lips are cracked or you are sensitive to either.

Does a lip scrub help dark lips?

A scrub helps with the dullness that comes from dead, flaky skin, not with pigment itself. Buffing away flakes makes lips look smoother and lets balm or colour sit evenly. Our Lip Scrub uses fine walnut shell grits in a base of mango butter, shea butter, coconut and castor oils, with peppermint for a cool tingle and beeswax to seal. It is 10 gm, has no added preservatives, and leaves out petroleum jelly, coal-tar dyes, parabens and synthetic fragrance. Two or three times a week is enough; lip skin is thin, and daily scrubbing can leave it raw.

Is lemon, sugar or turmeric good for dark lips?

Most home remedies soften or stain rather than lighten, and one of them, lemon, can do harm.

Remedy What it actually does Our view
Sugar and honey scrub Lifts flakes; honey holds moisture Fine occasionally, with light pressure
Lemon juice Acidic; stings cracked lips and can cause a burn-like reaction in sunlight Skip it
Beetroot Leaves a temporary pink stain Adds colour; does not change pigment
Turmeric and milk Traditional; can stain yellow Little evidence for lips
Coconut oil, almond oil, ghee Soften and reduce moisture loss Good for dryness
Aloe vera gel Soothing Fine; patch test first

A simple lip scrub and lip balm routine

Two or three nights a week: take a small amount of Lip Scrub on a fingertip, massage your lips in gentle circles, and rinse thoroughly.

Every night: layer Lip Balm generously at bedtime. It is made from seven ingredients: avocado, shea and cocoa butters, coconut and almond oils, geranium essential oil and beeswax, with no parabens, artificial colours or parfum.

Through the day: reapply balm whenever your lips feel tight, especially in air-conditioning, winter and on flights. If you like a little colour, Lip Tint takes its rosy shade from beetroot-infused sesame oil, blended with shea and avocado butters, and works with your own lip tone rather than covering it.

Habits that matter as much as products: stop licking your lips, drink enough water, and if you smoke, quitting helps your lips as much as the rest of you.

What mistakes should I avoid with dark lips?

  • Scrubbing every day or on cracked lips.
  • Putting lemon juice or toothpaste on lips.
  • Licking or biting lips, which dries them further.
  • Skipping sun protection outdoors.
  • Expecting a lighter natural shade, rather than smoother, more even-looking lips.

Do I need sun protection on my lips?

Yes. Sun is one of the most common causes of darker lips, and lips have very little natural protection. Our lip balm does not have an SPF, so outdoors in strong sun use a lip product with a stated SPF, or shade your face with a hat or dupatta.

Safety and patch test

Try any new lip product on a small area first and stop if you notice itching, burning or swelling. The box after the FAQ has the full note, including when to see a doctor.

Frequently asked

Can lipstick make my lips darker?

It can if you react to an ingredient, often a dye or fragrance. If your lips darken, itch or peel after a new product, stop using it and see whether they settle.

Can I use lip scrub on cracked lips?

Wait until cracks heal. Scrubbing broken skin stings, and the peppermint will feel stronger. Use balm alone until then.

Is the lip balm vegan?

No. Lip Balm, Lip Scrub and Lip Tint all contain beeswax. Lip Balm also contains almond oil, a tree nut, so skip it if you have a nut allergy.

How long before my lips look better?

Smoothness is immediate after scrubbing and balm. Changes in pigment, where they happen at all, take months and depend on removing the cause.

Can drinking water help dark lips?

Staying hydrated helps dryness and flaking, which can make lips look dull. It will not change pigment.

Can I use lip scrub every day?

We do not recommend it. Lip skin is thin, and two or three times a week is enough.

Can I use these lip products on a child or during pregnancy?

Ask your doctor or paediatrician first. Lip products are cosmetics, and the beeswax and tree-nut ingredients mentioned above may not suit everyone.

Patch test first. These are cosmetics, not treatments. Try any new lip product on a small area first, and stop if you notice itching, burning or swelling. See a doctor or dermatologist if your lips darken suddenly, if you have a single dark spot that grows, bleeds or changes, or if darkening comes with tiredness or other symptoms.
