Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
What tea tree is, how it is traditionally used, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.
What it is
An Australian leaf essential oil, first used by First Nations Australians. It is not Indian.
Key compounds
Terpinen-4-ol.
What studies show
- A 5% tea tree gel reduced acne lesions more than placebo over 45 days. This was a double-blind trial (n=60) (PubMed).
- A 5% tea tree shampoo improved dandruff by 41%, versus 11% with placebo, over 4 weeks (n=126) (PubMed).
- A review of 46 trials rated the overall quality "poor to modest" (PubMed).
Safety
Never apply it neat. It has the most reported allergies of any essential oil, and oxidised oil is worse (PubMed). Keep it airtight.
GraceYes products that contain it
