Short answer: Mix two to three spoons of bhringraj powder with warm water, curd or coconut oil, apply it to your scalp, leave it for 30 to 45 minutes and rinse, once or twice a week. It is a traditional support for hair fall, not a cure: give it a few months of steady use, and see a doctor about sudden shedding.
What is bhringraj, and is it good for hair fall?
Bhringraj is the leaf of Eclipta alba, a small plant that classical Indian texts call kesharaja, the "king of hair". It has been used in scalp oils and hair packs in India for generations, mainly for hair fall and early greying.
The leaf carries wedelolactone and flavonoids, plant compounds studied for their role in scalp and hair health. Most of that research so far has been in laboratories and animals; one often-cited 2008 study looked at hair growth in rats. Careful human trials are still few, so treat bhringraj as a well-loved habit rather than a proven treatment.
How do you use bhringraj powder for hair?
Make a smooth paste, apply it to the scalp, wait 30 to 45 minutes and rinse well. Once or twice a week is enough.
- Mix two to three spoons of powder with warm water, curd or a little coconut oil until it is like thick batter.
- Part your hair and apply the paste to the scalp in sections.
- Leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes. A shower cap stops it drying and flaking.
- Rinse thoroughly, then use a mild wash if your scalp still feels gritty or oily.
Our Bhringraj Powder (100 gm) is a single ingredient: Eclipta alba leaves, shade-dried so the green holds, then stone-ground and sifted fine so the paste stays smooth. It has no filler, fragrance or preservative.
What can I mix with bhringraj powder?
Water, curd and oil are the three classic bases, and bhringraj also pairs well with other hair herbs.
| Mix with | Texture | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm water | Light paste | Oily scalps; a quick weekly pack | Dries fastest, so cover your hair |
| Curd | Creamy, cooling | Dry or rough lengths | Rinse well so no sour smell lingers |
| Coconut oil | Rich paste | Dry, tight scalps | Needs a proper shampoo afterwards |
| Amla powder | Light paste | Dull, limp hair | Use equal parts, mixed in water |
| Curry leaf powder | Earthy paste | Anyone shedding more than usual | Two spoons each, in curd or warm oil |
Our Amla Powder is 100% dried Indian gooseberry, and our Curry Leaf Powder is shade-dried kadi patta and nothing else, so you can combine them in whatever proportion suits you.
How do I make bhringraj oil at home with the powder?
Warm the powder gently in coconut oil, let it steep, then strain. The aim is to infuse, not to fry.
- Add two to three tablespoons of bhringraj powder to about 100 ml of coconut oil in a small steel pan.
- Warm it on the lowest flame, or over a pan of hot water, for 10 to 15 minutes. Take it off the heat if it starts to smoke.
- Cover and leave it to steep overnight, then strain through muslin into a clean, completely dry glass bottle.
- Keep it dry and out of sunlight, and make small batches.
Our Coconut Oil (100 ml) is cold-pressed coconut with no refining step, a good base for this. Massage the oil into your scalp and leave it on for at least an hour, or overnight, before washing.
Can bhringraj turn grey hair black?
No. Bhringraj is traditionally used to support hair against early greying, and some people find it gives hair a slightly deeper look, but no herb reverses hair that has already turned grey.
How long does bhringraj take to work?
Expect gradual, subtle change rather than a quick result. Give it a few months of steady weekly use alongside a balanced diet before judging it.
Hair fall has many causes, including stress, illness, thyroid problems, low iron and hormones, which a hair pack cannot reach.
Frequently asked
Can I add bhringraj to amla, reetha and shikakai?
Yes. Stir a spoon or two into your usual herbal hair-wash mix.
Can I leave the paste on overnight?
We suggest 30 to 45 minutes for the paste; it dries hard and is difficult to rinse out. If you want an overnight treatment, use homemade bhringraj oil instead.
Will it tint light or coloured hair?
Leaf powders can leave a faint greenish or darker tinge on very light, grey or bleached hair. Try it on one strand first.
Patch test first. This is a cosmetic, not a treatment for hair loss. Apply a little paste behind your ear or on your inner arm for 24 hours and stop if it itches, stings or turns red. Keep it out of your eyes and do not apply it to broken or inflamed skin. See a doctor or dermatologist about sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss, and ask your doctor before using new hair products during pregnancy. For children, check with your paediatrician first.
