Short answer: Curry leaves (kadi patta) are a traditional Indian hair-care herb for hair fall and early greying, but the research is thin and they will not reverse grey hair. To use them, mix two spoons of curry leaf powder with curd or warm coconut oil, apply to the scalp for 30 to 45 minutes, and repeat weekly.
Are curry leaves good for hair fall?
They are a gentle, traditional support, not a treatment. Curry leaves (Murraya koenigii) carry amino acids, beta-carotene and antioxidant polyphenols, and South Indian homes have used them on hair for generations.
What they lack is good human research. A Healthline review of the claims notes that evidence for curry leaves and hair is mainly anecdotal and that peer-reviewed studies are lacking. Rich in antioxidants is not the same as proven to reduce shedding.
It also helps to know what counts as hair fall. The American Academy of Dermatology says shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Much of the everyday "hair fall" people notice is breakage from dry, rough lengths, and that is where regular oiling and a softening pack can make a visible difference.
Can curry leaves turn grey hair black?
No. Curry leaves are traditionally used to help hold on to natural colour for longer, but nothing in them reverses hair that has already turned grey. Greying is largely decided by genetics and age.
Curry leaf powder is not a dye, so it will not cover greys either.
How do you use curry leaf powder for hair?
Make a smooth paste, apply it to the scalp, wait 30 to 45 minutes and rinse well, once or twice a week.
- Mix two spoons of powder with curd or warm coconut oil until it is like thick batter.
- Part your hair and apply the paste to the scalp in sections.
- Leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes. A shower cap stops it drying and flaking.
- Rinse thoroughly, then follow with a mild wash if your scalp feels oily or gritty.
Our Curry Leaf Powder (100 gm) is a single ingredient: curry leaves, shade-dried rather than sun-baked so they keep their deep green and familiar smell, then ground and sifted fine. There is no green colourant, filler or perfume. It is packed for hair care only, so do not use it in cooking.
Curd, coconut oil or amla: what should you mix it with?
Choose the base by how your scalp and lengths feel. Curd suits dry hair best, oil suits a tight scalp, and water is lightest.
| Mix with | Texture | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curd | Creamy, cooling | Dry or rough hair | Rinse well so no sour smell lingers |
| Warm coconut oil | Rich paste | Dry, tight scalps; breakage-prone lengths | Needs a proper wash afterwards |
| Water | Light paste | Oily scalps | Dries fastest, so cover your hair |
| Amla powder | Light, tart paste | Dull, limp hair; anyone bothered by early greys | Equal parts, mixed in water or curd |
Our cold-pressed Coconut Oil is coconut pressed without heat, with no refining step. Its lauric acid can enter the hair shaft, which is why it is widely used to reduce protein loss during washing. Our Amla Powder is 100% dried Indian gooseberry, with no rice flour, dye or fragrance.
Can I make curry leaf oil at home?
Yes. Warm a handful of fresh, washed and fully dried curry leaves in coconut oil on the lowest flame until they turn crisp, let it cool, strain it into a dry glass bottle, and make small batches.
Massage it into the scalp and leave it on for at least an hour, or overnight, before washing. Do not let the oil smoke.
If you would rather not cook, our Hair Mask already includes curry leaf powder, with rice-infused rosemary flower water, papaya peel and reetha powders. Use it once or twice a week after shampoo, leave it for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse well.
How long do curry leaves take to work?
Expect gradual, subtle change in how your hair feels, softer lengths and less breakage, rather than visible regrowth. No hair pack can promise growth.
Hair fall linked to stress, illness, thyroid problems, low iron or hormones needs a doctor's advice; a leaf pack cannot reach those causes.
Frequently asked
Can I mix curry leaf powder with bhringraj or hibiscus?
Yes. Use equal parts in curd or warm oil. Hibiscus may leave a faint reddish tint on very light or coloured hair, so try a strand first.
Does eating curry leaves help hair?
Curry leaves are a normal part of Indian cooking, but there is no good evidence on how much, if any, would help hair. A balanced diet matters more than any single food.
Patch test first. These are cosmetics, not treatments for hair loss. Apply a little paste behind your ear or on your inner arm for 24 hours and stop if it itches, stings or turns red. For external use only; keep it out of your eyes and rinse thoroughly if contact occurs. See a doctor or dermatologist about sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss, and ask your doctor before trying new hair products during pregnancy. For children, check with your paediatrician first.
