Short answer: Both can suit an oily scalp, because neither relies on sulphates. Reetha is a single-ingredient powder that you mix fresh; it lifts oil well, but it takes more time and does not condition. A sulphate-free shampoo is quicker and easier to use often. Choose by how often you wash, not by which sounds more natural.
Key takeaways
- Reetha and sulphate-free shampoo both clean without sulphates.
- Reetha is one ingredient, mixed fresh, and suits once- or twice-a-week washing.
- A sulphate-free shampoo is the practical choice if you wash daily.
- Neither changes how much oil your scalp makes; a cleanser removes oil, it does not switch it off.
- Honest caution: reetha stings, so keep it out of your eyes.
What is the difference between reetha and a sulphate-free shampoo?
Both clean with mild cleansers instead of sulphates. Reetha (soapnut, the dried fruit of the Sapindus tree) contains saponins, plant compounds that foam in water. A sulphate-free shampoo uses mild manufactured cleansers, often made from coconut, in a ready-to-use liquid.
| Reetha powder | Sulphate-free shampoo | |
|---|---|---|
| What cleans | Natural saponins in the fruit | Mild cleansers, often coconut-derived |
| Ingredients | One: ground soapnut | Several, including water and a preservative |
| Preparation | Mix with warm water before each wash | None |
| Lather | Modest | Soft, less than a sulphate shampoo |
| Conditioning | None on its own; usually paired with shikakai and amla | Depends on the formula; ours includes oils and shea butter |
| Usually suits | Unhurried washes, once or twice a week | Frequent or daily washing |
Is reetha good for an oily scalp?
For most people, yes. Reetha's saponins lift oil and dirt, and it has been used as a hair wash in Indian homes for generations.
Our Reetha Powder (100 gm) is one ingredient: soapnut fruit pulp, deseeded and milled fine. It has no sulphates, silicones or synthetic fragrance, and as a dry powder it needs no preservative.

Not for you if you want a quick daily wash. A ready shampoo suits daily washing better.
The research is limited. In one 2024 study, a shampoo containing 10% soapnut extract reduced scalp oil after about four weeks. That was a manufactured extract shampoo, and some of the authors worked for a personal-care company. It was not a home-mixed powder, so it is not a promise about ours.
Is sulphate-free shampoo good for an oily scalp, or does it leave hair greasy?
A well-made one cleans an oily scalp properly, even though it foams less. Rich foam comes from sulphates, so a softer lather does not mean a weaker wash.
Our Hair Wash & Conditioner (200 ml) uses three coconut-derived cleansers: coco glucoside, coco betaine and sodium cocoyl isethionate. It also contains watermelon seed oil, shea butter and fenugreek for the lengths, which is why its page describes it as built for an oily scalp with dry ends. Because it is water-based, it contains a preservative (Sensicare).
If you are switching from silicone-heavy products, expect a short transition while the build-up rinses away. Apply shampoo to the scalp rather than along the full length of your hair.
Can I use reetha every day on an oily scalp?
You can use it often, but most people do not need to. Our page suggests reetha once or twice a week in place of shampoo, and a little more often if your scalp is very oily.
If you wash every day, a ready-made shampoo is more practical. The page for our Hair Wash & Conditioner says daily use is fine for oily scalps, and that two to three washes a week suit most people.
How do you wash an oily scalp with reetha?
Mix it thin, work it into the scalp and rinse for longer than you think you need to.
- Mix two to three spoons of reetha powder with warm water into a thin paste or lather, and let it stand for a few minutes.
- Massage it into the scalp, then work it through the hair.
- Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes if you like.
- Rinse very thoroughly, keeping the lather well away from your eyes.
For softer lengths, add Shikakai Powder and amla. The Amla Reetha Shikakai Powder Combo page suggests two parts reetha to one part each of shikakai and amla for an oily scalp. Use a mixed wash the same day.

Which should you choose for an oily scalp?
- You wash daily, or you are short of time: a sulphate-free shampoo.
- You want a single ingredient and wash once or twice a week: reetha.
- Your scalp is oily but your lengths are dry: a shampoo that also conditions, or reetha mixed with shikakai and amla.
Neither will change how much oil your scalp makes. A cleanser removes oil; it does not switch it off. For why we avoid sulphates at all, read our note on sulphates.
Frequently asked
Does reetha dry out hair?
Reetha cleans but does not condition, so hair used to a sulphate shampoo can feel different for the first few washes. Mixing in shikakai and amla helps.
Can I use reetha on colour-treated hair?
Reetha has no sulphates, and our page lists colour-treated hair among those it is for. Try it on one section first.
Safety note. These are cosmetics, not treatments. Patch test before first use. Reetha stings, so keep it out of the eyes and rinse well with water if contact occurs. For external use only. See a dermatologist about persistent itching, heavy flaking, sores or sudden hair fall, and ask a paediatrician before using reetha on a child.
