Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

What ashwagandha is, how classical Indian texts describe it, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.

Names

Asgandh (Hindi); Ashwagandha (Sanskrit). The part used is the root.

Classical Indian view

API Vol I lists it as Balya and Rasayana, and Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 4.10) places it in the Balya group. The classical texts list no skin or hair use. Its cosmetic use is modern.

Key compounds

Withanolides (withaferin A, withanolide A).

What studies show

  • An 8% root-extract lotion improved wrinkles, hydration and elasticity over 60 days compared with placebo. This was a randomised trial (n=56) (PubMed).
  • A root-extract serum reduced hair shedding and improved hair density over 75 days compared with placebo. This was a randomised trial with 61 people analysed (PubMed).

Limits

Both trials used a single branded extract.

Safety

Side effects matched placebo in both trials. Patch test.
