Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)
What brahmi is, how classical Indian texts describe it, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.
Names
Brahmi (Hindi and Sanskrit), water hyssop. Check the botanical name when buying, because gotu kola is also sold as "Brahmi".
Classical Indian view
API Vol II lists it as a Medhya Rasayana (brain tonic), with uses in Kushtha and Shopha (swelling). Its use in hair oils is traditional; we have not traced it to a classical text.
Key compounds
Bacosides.
What studies show
- A Bacopa extract sped wound healing in rats (PubMed).
- A 2026 review lists it among plants with anti-hair-loss activity, all preclinical (PubMed).
Limits
There are no human topical trials.
Safety
There is little topical data. Patch test.
