Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
What calendula is, how it is traditionally used, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.
What it is
Pot marigold flowers, infused in oil. Its tradition is European. It is not the Indian genda (Tagetes), which is a different plant.
Key compounds
Faradiol esters, flavonoids, carotenoids.
What studies show
- A review of 14 studies found some evidence of faster early wound healing (PubMed).
- In breast-cancer radiotherapy, 41% of patients using calendula had significant skin reactions, versus 63% using trolamine. This was a phase III trial (n=254) (PubMed).
- A later, smaller trial found no difference from a standard cream (PubMed).
Safety
It is in the daisy family. About 2% of patch-tested patients react (PubMed). Patch test.
GraceYes products that contain it
Baby Diaper Rash Balm, Baby Powder, Baby After Shower Oil.
