Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
What eucalyptus is, how classical Indian texts describe it, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.
Names
Nilgiri (Hindi); Tailaparna (Sanskrit, API). It is a leaf essential oil.
Classical Indian view
Eucalyptus is Australian, not classical. The modern API has two monographs, one for the leaf (Vol V) and one for the oil (Vol VI, Tailaparna Taila). The oil monograph lists it as Krimighna (antimicrobial) and Putihara (removes odour), with uses in Tvakroga and Dushta Vrana (API Vol VI).
Key compounds
1,8-cineole (eucalyptol).
What studies show
- A eucalyptus leaf extract (not the oil) improved hydration and barrier function on dry skin (PubMed, PubMed).
- A review describes antimicrobial activity, mostly from lab work (PubMed).
Safety
Not for children under 2 (EMA), because it can trigger a breathing spasm. Swallowing it has caused seizures in children (PubMed). Dilute it and keep it away from young children's faces.
GraceYes products that contain it
Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Mosquito Repellent Spray (as a hydrosol), Soothing Muscle Oil, After Shower Oil.
