Kalonji oil for hair: benefits, how to use it and side effects

Short answer: Kalonji (black seed) oil is a traditional pre-wash scalp oil. To use it for hair, mix 1 part kalonji oil with 2 parts coconut or sweet almond oil, massage into the scalp, leave for 30 to 60 minutes and wash out, two or three times a week. Early research suggests it may help with some kinds of hair shedding, but it is not proven. Patch test first, because it can cause allergic reactions.

Key takeaways

  • Kalonji oil and black seed oil are the same thing, pressed from Nigella sativa seeds.
  • One small 2013 pilot study of a 0.5% lotion was promising for temporary shedding. It is not proven for pure oil.
  • Start with one part kalonji oil to two parts coconut or sweet almond oil, two or three times a week.
  • Honest caution: allergic skin reactions have been reported, so patch test first.

What is kalonji oil, and is it the same as black seed oil?

Yes. Kalonji oil is pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa, which is also sold as black seed or black cumin oil. Kalonji is sometimes called "onion seed" in shops, but it does not come from the onion plant.

Our Kalonji Oil (30 ml) has one ingredient: cold-pressed kalonji seed oil. There is no mineral oil, silicone, synthetic fragrance or added preservative in the bottle. Pure kalonji oil is dark, thick and strongly peppery in smell.

Is kalonji oil good for hair growth and hair fall?

It may help some people, but the research is small.

The study quoted most often is a 2013 pilot study of 20 women with telogen effluvium, a temporary form of shedding. Ten used a scalp lotion containing 0.5% Nigella sativa oil every day for three months, and ten used a placebo. Hair density improved in nine of the ten women using the kalonji lotion, and in three of the ten using the placebo.

That is encouraging, but it was a very small study of a manufactured lotion. It did not test pure oil, and it did not test ours, so please do not read it as a promise.

What people hope for What we can honestly say
Less hair fall One small pilot study of a 0.5% lotion was promising. It is not proven for pure oil.
Regrowth on bald patches We found no good evidence. See a dermatologist.
Grey hair turning black A traditional use only. We found no clinical evidence.
A calmer, less flaky scalp Thymoquinone is studied for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Our page notes that itchiness and flaking often settle before anything else.

How do you use kalonji oil on your hair?

Use it as a pre-wash scalp massage, and start diluted.

  1. Patch test behind the ear or on the inner arm before your first full use.
  2. Mix one part kalonji oil with two parts coconut or sweet almond oil. It can be used on its own, but a diluted blend is the gentler way to begin.
  3. Part your hair and massage the oil into the scalp with your fingertips.
  4. Leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes.
  5. Wash it out with a mild shampoo.

Which oil should you mix kalonji oil with?

Coconut and sweet almond are the two our product page suggests.

  • Coconut Oil (100 ml, cold pressed): its lauric acid is small enough to enter the hair shaft, which is why it is so widely used before washing.
  • Sweet Almond Oil (50 ml, cold pressed): lighter and less greasy. Avoid it if you have a tree-nut allergy.

Can you leave kalonji oil in your hair overnight?

Yes, if your scalp is comfortable with it. Our page suggests 30 to 60 minutes or overnight. Keep your first few uses short, and move to overnight only if you notice no itching or redness.

How often should you use kalonji oil?

Two or three times a week is enough. Hair grows in cycles, so any change in shedding is slow and individual, and we will not put a number on it.

What are the side effects of kalonji oil on hair?

The main risk is an allergic skin reaction. Dermatology journals have published case reports of contact allergy after people applied black seed oil to their skin, and a few of those reactions were severe and widespread.

  • Stop and wash the oil off if you notice itching, burning, redness or a rash.
  • Keep it away from your eyes, and rinse well with water if contact occurs.
  • Our oil is a cosmetic for external use only. Do not swallow it.

Frequently asked

Can I use kalonji oil on an oily scalp?
Yes. Our page says it suits oily scalps too, because it is applied before a wash and then shampooed out.

Does kalonji oil regrow hair on a receding hairline?
We cannot say that. Pattern hair loss needs a dermatologist's advice, not a cosmetic oil.

Kalonji oil or rosemary oil: which is better for hair fall?
Both have only early research behind them. Kalonji is used as a pre-wash scalp oil, while rosemary is an essential oil that must be diluted in a carrier first. Try one at a time for a few months so you can tell what suits you. See how to mix rosemary oil.

Can I use kalonji oil every day?
There is no need. Two or three times a week before washing is enough, and oiling every day can leave build-up on the scalp.

Does kalonji oil turn grey hair black?
No. There is no good evidence that any hair oil reverses grey hair. Kalonji oil is a pre-wash scalp oil, not a colour treatment.

Safety note. This is a cosmetic, not a treatment. Patch test before first use and stop if your skin reacts. For external use only; keep it out of the eyes. See a doctor about sudden, patchy or persistent hair loss, or a rash that spreads, and ask a doctor or paediatrician before use in pregnancy or on a child.
