Neem oil for dandruff: how to dilute and use it

Short answer: Do not put neem oil straight on your scalp. Mix one part neem oil with three or four parts coconut oil, massage it into the scalp, leave it for 30 to 60 minutes and wash it out with a mild shampoo, two or three times a week. Patch test first, and never use it on babies.

Key takeaways

  • Always dilute: one part neem oil to three or four parts coconut oil, weaker for a sensitive scalp.
  • Leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes, then wash it out. We do not suggest overnight use.
  • Neem may help mild dandruff, but most of the evidence is from the laboratory.
  • Honest caution: allergic reactions have been reported, and neem oil is not for babies.

Is neem oil good for dandruff?

It may help mild dandruff, but most of the evidence comes from the laboratory and not from trials on people.

Dandruff is linked to Malassezia, a yeast that lives on every scalp and feeds on its oil. In laboratory tests, neem extracts have slowed the growth of this yeast. The few studies on people are small and mostly tested blends of several herbs, so they cannot tell us how much neem did by itself. Treat neem oil as a traditional scalp oil, not a proven treatment. Medicated anti-dandruff shampoos have stronger evidence behind them.

How do you dilute neem oil for dandruff?

Use one part neem oil to three or four parts carrier oil, and go weaker if your scalp is sensitive. Our Neem Oil page suggests coconut oil as the carrier, such as our cold-pressed Coconut Oil; sweet almond oil also works.

Your scalp Ratio (neem : carrier) Kitchen measure
First use, or a sensitive or dry scalp Weaker than 1 : 4, for example 1 : 6 ½ teaspoon neem oil in 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Most scalps 1 : 4 1 teaspoon neem oil in 4 teaspoons coconut oil
Oily scalp that has tolerated neem before 1 : 3 1 teaspoon neem oil in 1 tablespoon coconut oil

How do you apply neem oil to the scalp, step by step?

Use it as a short pre-wash treatment in the evening.

  1. Patch test the diluted blend on your inner arm before your first full use.
  2. Mix a fresh blend. One tablespoon is enough for most scalps.
  3. Part dry hair and massage the oil into the scalp with your fingertips. The lengths do not need it.
  4. Leave it on for 30 to 60 minutes.
  5. Wash it out thoroughly with a mild shampoo. Our Hair Wash & Conditioner (200 ml) is a gentle sulphate-free wash, not a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo.

Repeat two or three times a week. Daily use raises the chance of irritation.

Can you leave neem oil in your hair overnight?

We do not suggest it. Thirty to sixty minutes is enough, and a longer soak keeps a strong oil against your skin for hours. You would also take its sharp, garlicky smell to bed. That smell is normal for unperfumed neem oil.

Can oiling make dandruff worse?

For some people, possibly. Malassezia feeds on oils, and a 2023 letter in a dermatology journal suggested that common hair oils left on the scalp may encourage it. The authors noted that this has not been tested in clinical studies. So keep neem oil as a short treatment that you wash out fully, not a leave-in.

What are the side effects of neem oil on the scalp?

The main risks are irritation and allergic skin reactions. A 2018 case report described a man who developed an eczema-like rash after repeatedly applying neem oil to his skin, and patch testing confirmed that he was allergic to it.

  • Wash the oil off and stop using it if you notice burning, itching, redness or a rash.
  • Keep it away from your eyes, and rinse well with water if contact occurs.
  • It is for external use only. Do not swallow it, and store it out of children's reach.
  • Do not use it on babies.

Frequently asked

Can I apply neem oil directly, without diluting it?
No. The bottle holds only cold-pressed neem seed oil, which is potent. Always dilute it first.

How soon does neem oil help with dandruff?
Flaking and itching often ease with regular twice-weekly use, but this differs from scalp to scalp, so we will not name a number of days.

Can I use neem oil for my baby's flaky scalp?
No. Our neem oil is not for babies. Ask your paediatrician about cradle cap.

Safety note. Neem oil is a cosmetic, not a treatment for any scalp condition. Patch test before first use and stop if your skin reacts. See a doctor or dermatologist if flakes are thick, yellowish or greasy, if the skin is red, sore or weeping, if you are losing hair in patches, or if dandruff has not eased after a few weeks of care. Ask your doctor before use in pregnancy, and a paediatrician before using any scalp oil on a child.
