Rose (Rosa damascena)

What rose is, how classical Indian texts describe it, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.

Names

Gulab (Hindi); Shatapatri (Sanskrit). The parts used are the petals, rose water and rose oil.

Classical Indian view

API Vol III (Satapatrika, the closely related Rosa centifolia) lists rose as cooling (Shita virya), Varnya and Pittahara, with uses in Kushtha and Daha (burning sensation). Rose water (Gulabjala) is a listed formulation (API Vol III).

Key compounds

Citronellol, geraniol and phenylethanol in the oil; gallic acid and anthocyanins in the petals.

What studies show

  • Rose oil killed acne bacteria within 5 minutes at 0.25% in the lab (PubMed).
  • A petal extract showed antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase activity (PubMed).

Limits

There are no strong human trials of rose water on skin.

Safety

Rose water is mild. Rose oil contains listed fragrance allergens, so dilute it.
