Shikakai (Acacia concinna)

What shikakai is, how classical Indian texts describe it, what published studies show and where they fall short, how to use it safely, and which GraceYes products contain it.

Names

Shikakai (Hindi), the soap pod. The part used is the dried pod.

Classical Indian view

Shikakai has no API monograph. Its use as a hair herb (keshya) is traditional; we have not traced it to a classical text.

Key compounds

Triterpenoid saponins and malic acid.

What studies show

  • A review of tropical shampoo herbs describes shikakai as a gentle saponin cleanser (PubMed).
  • A pod extract showed antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase activity in the lab (PubMed).

Limits

There are no human trials.

Safety

In 2005, the US Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel found the safety data insufficient for use in cosmetics (PubMed). Use it as a rinse-off, keep it out of the eyes, and patch test.

GraceYes products that contain it

Shikakai Powder, Amla Reetha Shikakai Powder Combo, Amla Reetha Shikakai Hibiscus Powder Combo.
